Beyond the Surface: David Garcia on Abstraction, Imperfection, and the Beauty of Change
Location: New Jersey, USA
2nd Place Awardee for the Abstract Art Online Competition and Juried Exhibition
Abstraction offers a space where emotion exists without the need for explanation. Through layered textures, architectural forms, and a thoughtful interplay of color, artist David Garcia creates compositions that balance structure with fluidity, stillness with movement, and restraint with expressive energy.
Born and raised in New York City, Garcia draws inspiration from the shapes and spaces that define the world around him. His paintings invite viewers to look beyond the immediately visible, discovering subtle gestures, emerging forms, and personal meanings within each composition. Rather than prescribing a singular interpretation, he allows the work to remain open to individual experience.
Recognized as the Second Place Winner — Jurors’ Choice in CEV Art Gallery’s “Abstract Art” Competition & Juried Exhibition, Garcia brings a distinctive perspective to contemporary abstraction. In this featured artist interview, he shares insights into his creative process, his appreciation for imperfection and transformation, and his desire to create work that resonates with viewers on an emotional level.
Tell us about the artwork that earned you this recognition. What inspired the piece, and what would you like viewers to discover or feel when they experience it?
Born and raised in New York City, I've always been inspired by structural shapes and the spaces that surrounds – a mix of soft and bold tones which envokes a sense of calm yet dynamic, structure and fluidity, stillness and movement. My intention is to creating an emotion that exist without explanation offering an experience that allows each viewer to discover their own connection, feeling, and interpretation within the work.
Abstract art often invites viewers to create their own interpretation. What role do emotion, intuition, or personal experience play in the way you develop your work?
Trusting the process, embracing uncertainty and exploratory. I build layers of texture, gesture, and visual tension, translating these experiences into contemporary compositions that invite personal interpretation.
Walk us through your creative process. How does an abstract piece typically evolve from your initial idea or inspiration into the finished artwork?
I just build layers usually 3 to 4 layers of peep-a-boo colors. Themes can vary from cityscapes to land or seascapes with color that complement each others.
Your work communicates without relying on a literal narrative. What do you hope your artwork says about you as an artist, your experiences, or the way you see the world?
My belief that beauty can be found in imperfection, change, and the traces left behind by time—as a place shaped by layers of experiences, moments of disruption, and the quiet resilience of things that endure.
As an online art contest, your work is being viewed on screens all over the world. How does it feel to share your art in a digital space compared to a physical gallery, and how do you think that accessibility impacts the way people connect with your message?
The digital space creates a different kind of intimacy, allowing viewers to discover the work in their own time and personal surroundings. Ultimately, I hope my art invites people to look beyond the surface, and find something of their own story within it.

David Garcia’s work reminds us that art does not always need to offer answers. Sometimes, its greatest impact lies in the questions it leaves behind, the emotions it awakens, and the connections that emerge through personal interpretation.
His appreciation for imperfection, the passage of time, and the resilience found in moments of change gives his abstract compositions a quiet sense of depth. Through layers of texture, shifting colors, and the tension between structure and spontaneity, Garcia creates visual experiences that encourage viewers to pause and discover something beyond the surface.
As his practice continues to evolve, Garcia looks forward to exploring new possibilities in depth, expression, color, movement, and materials. Having primarily sold his work through private collectors and direct commissions, he also hopes to expand his presence in online and physical galleries, connecting with new audiences along the way.
