At CEV Art Gallery, we are committed to celebrating the voices, visions, and journeys of artists from around the world. In this special feature, we are honored to spotlight Kim Wright, the featured artist of our upcoming “Artopia – Flowers and Birds” online exhibition. Known for her delicate yet powerful compositions, Kim invites viewers into a world where nature and imagination intertwine. In this interview, we explore the inspiration behind her work, her creative process, and the story that continues to unfold through her art.

Can you tell us a bit about your journey as an artist—how did it all begin for you?

It all began at an early age when I inherited my late aunt's art supplies. In the beginning my focus was on portraits. I drew portraits of all the celebrities I admired as a teenager and my classmates. I studied Fine Arts at Scottsdale Community College and Arizona State University, later receiving a degree in Graphic Design. After a long, successful career in graphic design, I have returned to my love of painting.

What themes or stories do you explore most in your work, and what inspires those choices?

I have been naturally curious all my life, which leads my creativity. This has taken me in many directions to experiment with different mediums and styles. I am inspired by nature and the endless beauty it provides, from florals and gardens to colorful landscapes.

What is your creative process like—from idea to finished piece?

My concepts begin with photography, from garden scenes, or studio still life. I enjoy processing my reference photos to manipulate the composition, and enhance the lighting and color saturation. This sets up the direction I want to take and the choice of medium that best executes the painting. Then the composition is sketched onto the substrate that best works for the medium, be it acrylic, pastel, or mixed media.

Is there a particular piece in your collection that holds special meaning for you? If so, why?

"When Hummingbirds Dream in Color" is a painting that holds special meaning to me because my grandson was involved in the beginning. I was teaching him a special technique using multiple layers of acrylic paint and an alcohol resist that built the background for this painting. The background is rich in deep reds, warm colors and textures that represent my love of family. I choose the hummingbird as my subject because they are a symbol of love, and devotion. The hummingbird's curious and playful nature is also very childlike to me, adding to the vibrant energy of this painting.

How do you stay motivated and inspired, especially during creative blocks?

I love being a full time artist. I am currently managing a small gallery with 15 other artists who inspire me everyday. We inspire each other to continue creating and sharing our love of art with our community. Being submersed in creative energy is truly a blessing to me.

Anything else you want our audience and art collectors to know about you?

My intention as an artist is to create art with a message of calm and joy; art that inspires; art that is uplifting; and art that brings hope, light, and joy back into the world. Art that evokes an emotion of joy and has a calming affect on all who view it. Art that helps us all to exhale the past, and breathe in all the beauty we are surrounded by.

What’s next for you creatively—are there any upcoming projects, shows, or goals you're excited about?

My recent mixed media pieces have taken me on a creative journey guided by imagery found in nature. Each piece is built from monotype prints created using flowers, leaves, seeds and repurposed textures. The vision for the piece begins to come forward while working with these prints. I have begun a series of paintings that contain hidden messages and themes that draw the viewer in. My goal in this creative process is to direct the viewer through the piece with a rhythm of color, textures and shapes that stimulate their imagination to interpret the imagery, creating their own narrative.

Kim Wright’s work reminds us of the quiet power that art holds to connect us with nature, memory, and emotion.
