1st PlaceWinner — “Luminous” Exhibit, Judy Gallagher
We are thrilled to introduce Judy, the brilliant 1st place winner of our Luminous exhibition! Based out of Havertown, Judy’s journey with photography began at just fifteen years old, sparked by a high school chemistry teacher's offer of extra credit that quickly ignited a lifelong passion. Having evolved her craft from the traditional darkrooms of film photography to the dynamic capabilities of the digital world, Judy masterfully blends classic technique with modern innovation. Her award-winning work has captured audiences across physical community art centers in the Philadelphia area and premier virtual spaces alike.
For Judy, photography is a continuous journey of discovery and connection, driven by the belief that there is always something new to learn. In her winning entry for Luminous, she captures the breathtaking, unpredictable magic of light in motion, a striking testament to her philosophy of finding the extraordinary within the ordinary.

Can you tell us a bit about your journey as an artist—how you first discovered your passion for art and what has shaped your creative path over the years?
Photography has been part of my life since I was fifteen, when my chemistry teacher encouraged me to join the school photography club for extra credit. What began as a way to earn extra credit quickly grew into a lifelong passion. That small nudge opened the door to a lifelong practice of looking closely, noticing, and translating what I see into images. Having started in the darkroom with film and then transitioned to digital, I combine traditional craft with contemporary tools. Along the way, I’ve been honored with awards and have exhibited my work at community art centers in the Philadelphia area and virtual galleries in the United States. For me, photography is both an exploration and a connection: a way to frame the beauty in the ordinary, and to share my photographic vision with others.
Every great work of art starts with a spark. Can you tell us about the specific inspiration behind your winning entry? Was there a particular moment, emotion, or observation that compelled you to bring this vision to life?
This particular image was inspired by my friends and I playing in my backyard with steel wool lit on fire and spinning. That inspired me to seen higher levels of spinning art leading to this image!
This competition explores all forms of light and illumination. How did you decide on your specific color palette for this work, and what mood or message were you hoping those choices would communicate to the viewer?
With this kind of photography, there are always surprise images because you cannot easily predict how the steel wool and flames will present.
Looking ahead, what direction do you see your art evolving toward, and are there any upcoming projects or exhibitions you’re particularly excited about?
I am currently focusing on water drop photography and improving on my ICM photography.
As an online art contest, your work is being viewed on screens all over the world. How does it feel to share your art in a digital space compared to a physical gallery, and how do you think that accessibility impacts the way people connect with your message?
Starting in film photography, I am drawn to printed images but being part of an online gallery is exciting as it allows me to share my work with so many more people in this virtual gallery in a sleek looking online gallery.
Anything else you want our audience to know about you?
I love photography because there is always something new to learn!
Thank you, Judy, for sharing the brilliant story and creative spark behind your stunning work! We are incredibly honored to showcase your talent as our Luminous 1st place winner, and we can’t wait to see where your explorations into water drops and intentional camera movement take you next.
