Meet the Artist: Jo Paff: A Journey of Resilience, Color, and Creative Renewal
Santa Fe-based artist Jo Paff brings a rich and multifaceted journey to his contemporary abstract work, one shaped by early artistic training, decades of military service, and a return to creativity later in life. A former Fine Arts and Art History student at the University of Nebraska in Omaha, Jo studied under influential mentors Peter Hill and Sidney "Buzz" Buchanan. After a 20-year career in the U.S. Marine Corps, he has reconnected with his passion for painting, using bold color, structured design, and a disciplined process to create art that inspires and honors his past.
Let’s start from the beginning... can you share a bit about your creative journey and what led you to the work you’re doing today?
I studied art at the University of Nebraska in Omaha (Fine Arts & Art History 1976-1980) with teachers & Art Mentors Peter Hill & Sidney "Buzz" Buchanan. I loved painting and was greatly influenced by Peter Hill's teaching. After this, I enlisted in the Marine Corps and served 20 years. I did not paint while enlisted, however, now that I am semi-retired and have time again to paint.
What inspires your creative process, and how do you stay motivated through challenges or creative blocks?
I paint to inspire others, never to impress. And I paint to honor my art teachers: Peter Hill & Sydney "Buzz" Buchanan, Painting relaxes me. Before working on a canvas I sketch each design on paper with much forethought. Having received several artistic awards has encouraged me.
How has your identity or personal experiences shaped your voice as an artist and entrepreneur?
The Marine Corps teaches you discipline and perseverance ....and to "not give up until you get it right".
Can you share a project or moment in your journey that felt especially meaningful or transformative for you?
This past Spring I received a marvelous gift book from Jonathan (Rob) Hill who published his father's (my art teacher Peter Hill) complete works of art. This was very special and most motivating for me. The book is visually stunning and re-connected me with my days as an art student.
Tell us more about your technique and what was your inspiration behind the process?
I enjoy contemporary abstract Hard-Edge Painting which I learned from my University of Nebraska art teacher, Peter Hill. He used commercial grade Latex paint and challenged students to "paint what has never been seen". I also use Latex paint, but do not use an easel. I prefer to work from above my painting which allows me to walk all around the canvas.
Anything else you want our audience to know about you?
In college I won All American Track & Field Div II for 10 K distance, and also completed 3 marathons.
Jo Paff’s creative journey is a testament to the enduring power of passion, discipline, and purpose. From the classroom to the canvas, through the structure of military life and the freedom of artistic expression, he continues to honor his mentors, inspire others, and create with intention. As he paints from a place of reflection and renewal, his work invites viewers to see not only what is, but what can be imagined.
